The Sensory Benefits of a Cuddle Swing...
And how to make one for under $30 PLUS many other inexpensive ideas!

An indoor swing is quite possibly the most important sensory tool in the home for any child. It can be used as a calming or alerting tool depending on the moment and sensory need. I especially like cuddle swings because of this versatility.
Here are a few other reasons:
  •  Encourages full body flexion
  •  Allows for prone extension and various body positions in the swing
  •  Deep pressure touch and proprioceptive input the entire time the child is in the swing
  •  Can serve as a sensory retreat
  •  The texture of the swing is tolerated well and often very soothing
  •  And of course vestibular input :-)

Materials Needed for the Swing and Hardware:
  • You will need 3 yards of either nylon or spandex from a fabric store,  no sewing required!
  • A sturdy chain, D-ring, and eye screw (the largest you can find) for the ceiling hardware
  • Tie the fabric ends into a knot around the chain
  • For heavier children, you can double the fabric so it stretches less
For Safe Attachment in the Ceiling:
  • Either use a rotational device or be sure the eye screw is installed at an angle.
  • Locate a ceiling beam or a stud for secure installation of the eye screw. Do not install in to drywall only!
  • You can use a stud finder, a strong magnet, or a small nail to locate safe placement in the ceiling.
  • Pre-drill the hole for the eye screw.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As with any and all suspended swings and equipment, safety MUST come first. Please be sure the area used to suspend any swing is reinforced to hold the weight of the child. Not all swings are appropriate for all sizes. Supervision is strongly recommended for all suspended swinging activities.

Here are a few other options for suspending a cuddle swing!
I realize that for various reasons, suspending a swing from the ceiling is not feasible.
