The Incredible Benefits of Earthing/Grounding
Angie Voss, OTR
Earthing, also called grounding, is a very simple, effective, and free technique to support our health and our nervous systems. It is simply connecting your body with the earth.
"Grounding or Earthing is defined as placing one's bare feet on the ground whether it be dirt, grass, sand, or concrete (especially when humid or wet). When you ground to the electron-enriched earth, an improved balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system occurs.
The earth is a natural source of electrons and subtle electrical fields, which are essential for proper functioning of immune systems, circulation, synchronization of biorhythms and other physiological processes and may actually be the most effective, essential, least expensive, and easiest to attain antioxidant." Why is this so important for our children with sensory differences?
Children with sensory differences tend to switch to fight or flight (the sympathetic nervous system) frequently, and often without reason or a trigger. This imbalance can be supported through earthing/grounding.

- Simply walk outside without shoes, even concrete or brick is a conductor and transfer of the energy and electrons, as long as the concrete or brick is not sealed
- Walking on wet grass or sand is even better
- Walking and playing in dirt, mud is even better
- Wet sand at the beach is the very best conductor...if you are lucky enough to live near a health gem like this, take advantage of it any chance you can get!
- Lay on the ground in the grass, on a blanket is ok, but direct contact is best
- If your child does not like the feeling of bare feet outdoors, moccasins allow for conduction, just not shoes with rubber soles.
- Ceramic tile indoors with bare feet is also an option
