And YES again I totally agree! The level of empathy towards others including animals is heightened for sure...tying in to the big picture of all of the senses so much more in tune, and then also seeing "the big picture" to it all so much clearer. I believe this all ties in to the gifted component. It is all such a beautiful and fascinating thing...but also an extreme burden on the heart and soul of those who feel this level of empathy...since we live in a pretty cruel and selfish world. (makes me so sad)

Do you think that in addition to the seven senses, there might be more such as empathy for others (including animals)?  I've noticed that my sensory kids usually have a deep concern for the well being of animals and people, myself included.  Temple Grandin definitely has a way of understanding animals.

Your dog (or cat!) can be an excellent substitute for a weighted blanket during times of sensory overload or dysregulation. Or simply throughout the day as a proactive sensory strategy! The soothing tactile input from the animal's fur is also great for calming and soothing the nervous system. One other component not talked about enough is the transfer of energy from the direct contact with the animal...animals have an extremely acute sense of positive or negative energy, and can assist the child's nervous system in returning back to ready state.

Cat purring has alot of calming power
